A9X
ANNIVERSARY COLLECTORS' EDITION!
"I AM
THE GREATEST!"
Do you understand what these phrases mean; “Win on Sunday, sell on
Monday,” “Works Team” or “Homologation Special”? If you answered
yes, chances are that you lived through the glory days when race cars were
road cars, and road cars were race cars.
The
days when you whacked down the cash on the Dealer’s counter, ‘sign
here, press hard – three copies’, drove your hot Holden off the
showroom floor, made minimal modifications, installed a roll cage and
bolted on a set of big rims and tyres and took it to the racetrack – to
race! It’s an even money bet that you probably drove it to the track and
drove it home too.
Australia
motorsport grew from the amateur days when ordinary blokes built their own
race cars at home or, as the 1960’s progressed, they could buy a car
equipped with cutting edge power, performance and handling from their
local motor Dealer and race that. By the early 1970’s things were
hotting up, a horsepower race and obsession with victory at Mount Panorama
saw the three Australia auto makers release ever more powerful cars.
‘The General’ understood the advantage of a good power-to-weight ratio
and concentrated on its little Giant Killer, the Torana, which grew into
the muscular vee eight warrior with the LH model’s SL/R 5000. This was
developed to the next level with the L34 and then evolved by addressing
what were seen as the few weaknesses in that incarnation - to the mighty
A9X.
To
many, the A9X will always be Number One. The A9X blazed a trail of glory
across the Australian motorsport landscape in the hands of the greatest
names ever seen.
It’s
the car that Brocky did the biggest demolition job on the opposition ever
seen at Bathurst in that famous year of 1979. The A9X is, to many, the
greatest racing touring car of all time.
The
much loved A9X recently celebrated the 30th anniversary since
its release in 1977. You can relive the birth of what many believe is the
greatest homologated road car to ever attack an Aussie track. JUST HOLDENS
Magazine has created a one-off, never-to-be-repeated SPECIAL COLLECTOR’S
EDITION to commemorate the 30th Anniversary of the debut of the
A9X. It’s okay if you are too young to have answered yes to the three
questions in the first paragraph, this great one-off publication will help
you understand what all the fuss was about.
In
either case, you will be sorry if you miss this.
